La Vida Hostel: A Budget-friendly Accommodation in Samal Island

Blessed with abundant marine life and beautiful white sand beaches, Samal Island is truly a go-to destination as well. A day tour at Samal Island is possible, but spending a night or two is great to fully experience the island. That said, a budget-friendly accommodation is more likely a good idea.

La Vida Hostel is a place to be if you are traveling on a budget, yet still prefer to have that homey vibe. The property has a spacious garden that feels so peaceful especially at night which I like the most. I find it calming just seating on one of their furniture in the reception area, browsing through my phone, chatting with a friend, or just simply reflecting about how my day went.

The reception area is one of my favorite parts of the property. Why? Simply because I find it very welcoming. It’s like a classic Filipino interior with materials used such as the rattan, bamboo, and capiz shells. Aside from that, the paintings add color and creates a nice ambiance with the natural light coming through during the day.

By the way, have I mentioned that the owner, Mr. Ninio, is an artist himself? The paintings you see are actually his works. Now, that is not only a reception area but also a mini art gallery. You can also find some of his painting in the rooms too.

Are we blending in with the colors of the paintings?

Speaking of the rooms, they are airconditioned and comfortable enough to stay for few days. It’s neat and clean. The toilet and bath have a hot shower installed, which is perfect after a tiring day from touring around the island. The first time we booked here, we stayed in a Double Room which is good for two persons. The second time, we stayed in a Family Room which can accommodate up to 5 persons. Both rooms have private bathrooms.

Family Room

La Vida Hostel has a common kitchen and dining area. If you want to prepare and cook you own meal, you can buy ingredients at the local market of Samal. Also, La Vida Hostel serves a decent breakfast. It might not be a heavy breakfast, but it will still fill your stomach. They have toasted bread, different flavors of jams, waffles, eggs, brewed coffee, and tea. Sadly, I forgot to take photos.

The major changes I noticed was the location of the reception area. Few years ago, it is located beside the dining area and the floor area is just enough to entertain guests. I can still remember having a chat with Sir Ninio during the first time we stayed here. He showed us his work area and some of his paintings. He told us that he had also participated and showed his works through exhibits. I appreciate how friendly and accommodating not only Sir Ninio is, but as well his whole staff.
